“Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.” -Carl Sandburg
Do you value your time? How you spend it is a sure indicator of how much you really do value it.
People are constantly complaining about never having enough time to do the things they feel they need or want to do.
- They want to eat healthier but don’t have enough time to shop for the right foods or time to cook a healthy meal.
- They want to exercise more but don’t have the time.
- They want to read more but don’t have the time. They want to relax more but don’t have the time.
We have all been caught up in the “not enough time” game, me included. So where does all of that much needed time come from? After all there are only 24 hours in a day.
Where and how do we start negotiating for this valuable thing called time? I suggest you start by figuring out what you value in life: health, family, learning, friendship? Once you have done that you can then ask yourself how much time you actually dedicate in a day to those things that you claim to value.
Ask yourself how much time you are spending on things that do not include that which you value. How much of your time are you giving away to other people’s needs, desires and wishes? How much time are you spending on things that are not adding value to your life, or things that are taking away from the time you could be spending on the things you do value?
When you are in a constant cycle of not enough time, chances are that you may not be prioritizing according to your values. You may be giving your time and energy away to other people, television, computer games, social media, even gossiping.
When we spend our time and energy on doing things we don’t love or that are not a part of our values, then we are not living an authentic life. The consequences are resentment, frustration, low energy, and yes, a perceived lack of time.
This is your time, and only you can claim it or give it away. Claim it and you will find yourself feeling healthier and happier.
